Nez Perce County is located in north-central Idaho and covers approximately 855 square miles. The county includes the cities of Lewiston, Lapwai, Culdesac, and Peck, along with the communities of Lenore, Leland, Gifford, Myrtle, Waha, Cameron, and Southwick. According to the 2020 Census, Nez Perce County has a population of 42,090 residents.
Founded on February 4, 1864, by the Idaho Territorial Legislature, Nez Perce County is one of Idaho’s original four counties. The county seat is Lewiston, Idaho, and the county’s present-day boundaries were established in 1911.
The area has deep historical significance in the Pacific Northwest. Explorers Lewis and Clark traveled through the region in 1805 during their famous expedition. The county was later named after the Nez Perce Tribe, the Native American people who have lived in the region for centuries.
Lewiston, Idaho also played an important role in Idaho history as the territorial capital for 22 months before the capital was moved to Boise.
